5 Myths about COVID-19

January 26, 2023

Covid-19 ThailandMYTH: COVID-19 cannot be transmitted in hot and humid climates

-You may think that because Thailand has a warm, tropical climate that the virus cannot spread here; however, this is certainly not the case. There have already been more than 2,000 documented cases in tropical climates like Indonesia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

MYTH: COVID-19 can be spread through mosquito bites.

-There is no evidence that this is true. COVID-19 is transmitted primarily through droplets from an infected person. These droplets enter the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes or from their nasal discharge or saliva.

MYTH: Only old people are at risk of catching COVID-19

-COVID-19 affects people of all ages. While the elderly and people with pre-existing health conditions appear to be more susceptible to becoming severely ill, young people are by no means safe from the virus. Moreover, young people can still carry the virus and infect those who are vulnerable. It is everyone’s responsibility to practice good hygiene habits and social distancing to stop the spread of COVID-19.

MYTH: Antibiotics are an effective treatment for COVID-19

-Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, not viruses. COVID-19 is a virus, and so antibiotics will have no effect. You should not self-prescribe antibiotics in any case because inappropriate use of antibiotics has contributed to the rise of bacterial infections that are resistant to antibiotics.  While it is possible to have co-infection, you should consult a doctor before starting an antibiotic regimen.

MYTH: Hot showers kill COVID-19

-This is not true. The best defense against COVID-19 is washing your hands properly and regularly and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
